Arturaidheacht "Tir-An-Air" by Tomas O Cillin, sagart

This story is one of several delightful romances told me by the late Pat Caine of this district. He was the last of a long line of story-tellers. From father to son, these tales of knightly chivalry along with a wealth of Ossianic and Red Branch lore, have been handed down, and remained to the last an exclusive family inheritance. The home of the Caines was long a centre of attraction for the whole district of Tir an Ái. Ther young and old, night after night, came to hear again the oft told tales of the hapless Conlaoch, of Oisin, of the mighty Goll and the crafty Conan, of Don Belianis, the Knight of the Golden Image, of Sir Galahad in cordibus under his Irish name Sir Balbhuaidh, of Alastrainn the Proud, of Amaris the Fearless, of Agmed the Glorious and Asap the Happy – the noble sons of the Prince of Camaralzman. The intense intellectual pleasure those tales afforded was not however, the sole raison d’etre of their being. There was something else. It was the old philosophy of the Gael, shaping all things to the glory of God. The word of the angel to St. Patrick was the motto of my storyteller: Ní raibh Fíannaidheacht agus diabhlaidheacht I n-aon teach ariamh. These nights of story were nights of sinlessness; no evil thoughts, no calumny, no detraction could co-exist with the narration of these tales. May light eternal shine on the soul of the last of these story-tellers who told their stories for the glory of God.

To Mr. Patrick Moran, M.A., Mulranny, who corrected all the proofs and added the notes, all my thanks are due.
